Alternative for Home Insulation

by Jill Gowan

Homes require some form of insulation in order to control the flow of heat inside the structure. For clarification, insulation is not a source of heat. Rather, it is a method of keeping warm air inside a building such as a house. Although insulation may come in different forms, the same principle of utilizing insulating materials to create air pockets which hinder heat flow stays the same. Home insulation materials may come from natural sources (i.e. sawdust, straw, and wool), modified natural materials (i.e. cotton, cellulose), and artificial sources (i.e. cementitious foam, plastic foam, fiberglass). In terms of cost, some materials can be acquired for free, while some insulation materials cost money.

There are several home insulation options to choose from, depending on the chosen material to be used. In addition, insulation materials come in various forms such as batts, blankets, loose fill, rigid boards, foam, barriers, and structural insulation. Here are some of the most common insulation materials utilized in construction:

Cellulose. This material is usually made from recycled newspaper pulp. It is cheap, saves a lot of energy, and least toxic. Boric acid is often added as a fire retardant. With an R-value of 3.7, this material is best suited for framed wall cavities and flat ceilings.

Sawdust. This material has long been used as an insulating material placed between the internal and external wall frame. With an R-value of 2.5, sawdust is usually air dried and added with boric acid or lime as a fire retardant.

Straw. Commonly formed into densely packed, stucco-coated bales, straw has flame- and vermin-resistant properties. Straw bales are commonly used to fill post-and-beam wall cavities.

Fiberglass. This material is produced by melting sand. Up to 30 percent recycled glass may be added. However, fiberglass consumes a lot of energy to produce, contains amounts of formaldehyde, and can irritate the eyes, skin, and lungs.

Polystyrene, Polyurethane, and Polyisocyanurate foam. Early production methods have used CFCs until the early 1990s, after which HCFCs have taken its place. This material is usually shaped into rigid boards.

InsulPro has taken home insulation one-step further by developing a safe and environmentally friendly insulation system based on polyester fibers sourced from recycled plastic bottles. In addition, InsulPro insulation products are categorized as non-irritant and non-toxic, making it suitable for home construction projects. Moreover, InsulPro products are also recyclable.

InsulPro NovaTherm ceiling blankets and wall insulation works utilizing the same principle as polyester used in pillows and sleeping bags. Polyester fibers trap heat in air pockets and inside the hollow fibers. With an R-value up to 6.0, this product also doubles as a noise absorber.

InsulPro NovaFloor underfloor insulation uses high-density polyester fibers to reduce draughts flowing from the floorboards. Safe and easy to install, this product has an R-rating of 1.4 and also works well in absorbing sound.
