Low Pressure Structural Foam Molding

by Melody Lyons

The technique of processing resins such as high-density polythene under reduced pressure is known as structural foam molding. It is generally regarded a branch of the older injection process. The process produces a rigid product with tough surfaces that could be confused with expanded polythene.

Conventional injection process is regarded as the mother of this process. However, unlike the injection process, it uses low pressure to force the molten polymer into the mould cavity in processing thermoplastics. In the process, the material is combined with inert gasses, which makes it flow easily. Alternatively, some chemicals could be added to the polymer and the gas they produce during reaction helps the material to flow.

Since very little pressure is used to compress the mould, the resulting product has a reduced density. This could reduce by up to 40%. These products also are relatively thick walled and have low tensile strength, however, thermal insulation is enhanced and the product has a high strength relative to the weight.

The steel plants used in the injection process could be replaced by ones made of softer metals because the process does not involve a lot of pressure. Cheaper materials such as aluminum can thus be used. This reduces the installation cost and it is, therefore, economically viable to produce products of low quality application such as the non reusable handling materials.

Because the tools are not subjected to high pressure, it is possible to produce extremely large moulds. It is thus possible to produce thick and extensive products. The size up to which the product could be is only limited by the machine size, and typically any size is producible.
