Help for Grandparents Shopping for an MP3 Player

By Matt C Pierson

If you are a grandparent and there is a little one in your family who would like an MP3 Player for their birthday or for Christmas, what do you do? There are many devices available in the market that are small as well as straightforward to use, but only a very few are advertised especially as an mp3 player for kids and many of those are poor quality devices. Several come with headphones but some don't, the range of storage space available on these devices is substantial, and the price range is just as large and doesn't always have a direct relationship to quality. This is a situation where grandparents may be able to use some tips on the best choice and what should be taken into account. In other words - HELP!

Of course, the very first thing to think about is the kids age. There are features on some of the devices that would be better suited for an mp3 player for teenagers. Older children would love them but a young kid's mp3 player needs to be very simple. Ease of use is critical especially for younger kids. Youngsters these days are terrific when it comes to mastering technology but for a very young kid consider that either you or their parents will be helping them operate the mp3 player the majority of of the time. Therefore, if you get something that even you do not understand then you are already in trouble. Read more about how to look for simplicity in a kids mp3 player.

Additionally, price is important. They do have mp3 players for kids that start at $100 per player, but it's not essential to spend that much on an appropriate mp3 player for a 5 or 6 year old or younger. However, you are in luck because some are priced from $25 and up. There are some that are too cheap and are cheaply built most likely wouldn't last the first year with the average youngster. So, on this one you should just use your judgement and consider the toughness, just imagine how often children will drop the player. Therefore, do not buy an mp3 player that is very pricey or has a glass display screen.

Something else to think about is whether the mp3 player needs to be charged or requires batteries. This is important because most children of the age 10 years and younger will neglect to turn the player off and the battery or the charge will drain rapidly. Therefore, the player under normal use should hold a reasonable charge. An automatic-shutoff function is something that can help greatly with this.

There are many choices out there that meet these qualifications. One is the SweetPea3, for children a little older (7+) there are some options under $50 like the SanDisk models.

I hope this helps you get started and that your grandchild enjoys their new mp3 player!
