Why Books With Strong Female Characters Are Everywhere These Days

By Flora Vinson

Even casual readers can't help but notice how popular and prevalent books with strong female characters are these days. While it is true that authors have written novels using women as the main protagonists in the past, there has never been a time when so many novels featured so many capable females. Here are some of the reasons why this trend is occurring.

It's not difficult to see how things have changed, after all. Fictional heroines like Alice and Toto's friend Dorothy had leading roles in their stories, but they were never the dominant forces that readers find in today's fictional heroines. Even in the lead role, they still seemed weak and in need of male help.

Today's women enjoy equality on a scale that those past generations might have never dreamed possible. That has led to a desire to provide even more powerful role models for young girls. Many of the women found in contemporary literature serve as inspirational role models for the feminine audience.

One can also not deny the role of movie heroines in this process. The popular heroine of the Hunger Games, which was adapted from novel form, is but the latest reminder of how audiences appreciate powerful females on screen. Novel writers who hope for movie adaptations of their works have taken note of this demand.

Finally, there is the undeniable fact that the use of women as primary protagonists opens up many new writing opportunities for writers everywhere. Many of the oldest tales known to man are now being revised for contemporary audiences simply by changing the setting and including one or two females in the plot's cast.

One thing is for certain: women today have an easier time seeing themselves in their favorite literary heroines, and those heroines are no longer playing the role of weaklings in need of male rescue. The shifting attitudes toward women have made it easier for everyone to appreciate books with strong female characters.
