The National Park Service manages the National Natural Landmark program and has designated a grand total of 586 national landmarks in the United States and its territories. These are areas which have been designated by the Secretary of the Interior as shining examples of the greatest natural geological sites in the United States. In the state of Colorado there are 12 National Natural Landmarks. There are many of these Natural Landmarks conveniently located near Denver, all within a brief drive from the Denver. Morrison Golden Fossil Areas
The Morrisin Golden Fossil Areas are found about 23 miles from Denver and it's a. K. A Dinosaur Ridge. The area is managed by the Friends of Dinosaur Ridge. This is a charity devoted to to preserving the fossils in Dinosaur Ridge and to educate the general public about the natural history of the Denver area. There is a visitor center that has a souvenier shop,and concessions stand. There are two trails for guests to explore, with both tour guide led and self-guided tours. Tour guide guided tours are booked in advance at $3 per guest plus a $36 deposit that covers 1 to 12 people in the party.
Roxborough State Park
Located in southwest of Denver, this gorgeous park was made to save the natural resources of the area. The park is open year round and their hours change according to the season. Visitors to the park can enjoy different pursuits like photography, hiking, wildlife viewing and many other summer and winter activities. The park doesn't provide picnic areas, but visitors are able to bring food.
Garden of the Gods
This Denver Natural Landmark is situated drive from the Denver city limits, near the the city Colorado Springs. The park offers lovely sandstone formations and an extraordinary view of Pikes Peak. The park is free to visitors and it opens at 5 am year round. The Visitor and Nature Center has a refrectory and souvenier and gift shop. There also are free guided tours and nature talks over the year.
Lost Creek Scenic Area, Pike National Forest
Another stunning Natural Landmark in Denver is situated in the Pike National Forest about 60 miles from the city of Denver. It has a stunning stream that flows underground and appears then again a short way down the valley. There are a few campgrounds and many trails in the area and it?s a good place for wildlife viewing.
Summit Lake inside Summit Lake Park
Situated 62 miles west of the city of Denver, this area is situated at Summit Lake Park which is Denver's highest mountain park. There are charges for certain areas and activities in the park, but they are reasonable and go to preserving the park. The area is superb for observing wildlife, in particular for mountain goats. The access to the lake is available until snow storms cut off travel to the area.
